“Hamas has suffered a heavy blow,” Defense Minister Ehud Barak said on Sunday (Apr. 10), referring to the escalation in the south over the past few days.
Barak said that in recent days Israel has received messages from various political sources that Hamas is interested in a ceasefire.
“In terms of responsibility, we do not differentiate between the political and military echelons of Hamas,” Barak said.
Barak emphasized that “Hamas is responsible for everything that happens in the Gaza Strip and for all organizations operating there. We will not accept attacks on our citizens, like the missile fire at the bus (which took place last Thursday) or the attempt to make 750,000 people live in shelters.”
In recent days, terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip have fired more than 120 rockets and mortars into Israeli territory. On Thursday, an anti-tank missile was fired by Palestinian terrorists at a school bus in southern Israel. Two Israeli civilians were wounded.
Barak said that the Iron Dome anti-rocket system represents “an important achievement. The system shot down eight of nine rockets that were heading for inhabited areas. The system is an achievement for research and development, industry and the air force. The system prevents harm, widens freedom for political action and enables the making of correct decisions.”
