Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Benny Gantz on Tuesday (September 6) conducted a joint visit to the Northern Command to check the readiness of IDF (Zahal) forces in that sector.

Barak and Lt. Gen. Gantz were accompanied by GOC Northern Command, Major General Yair Golan.

Barak said that the IDF (Zahal) is prepared for all possibilities, in regards to events that could occur if a Palestinian state is declared in the near future.

“I hope this will pass without violence, but we are thoroughly planning for other options as well,” Barak said.

Barak said that the IDF (Zahal) has formulated courses of action to try to prevent violent disturbances, loss of life and violations of Israel’s sovereignty.

In regards to the wider Middle East region, Barak said that Israel’s defense establishment “sees no reason that one of our [enemies] would currently initiate an all-out war against Israel.”

“I am convinced that our enemies would not dare to use chemical weapons against Israel…not now or in the future,” Barak continued. “They know very well why they should not even think about using chemical weapons against Israel.”
