IDF (Zahal) forces thwarted an attempt to smuggle drugs into the Golan Heights region of northern Israel on Tuesday night (August 9).

IDF (Zahal) soldiers identified two suspicious figures on the Syrian side of the border fence throwing a package into Israeli territory and called out to the suspects. Searches were conducted in the area and the contents of the package turned out to be 10kg of drugs.

The IDF (Zahal) and Israel Police patrol the northern border to prevent attempts to infiltrate into Israel.

The Golan Brigade has reported an increase in drug smuggling via the Syrian border over the past year, with a 50 percent increase in the number of caught smugglers.

The Golan Brigade and Israel Police are taking many measures to deal with drug smuggling.

A Northern Command officer said that cooperation with police is important in catching smugglers and added that most intercepted smuggling attempts are made possible by prior intelligence information.
