As part of the ongoing war against terror and its infrastructure, IDF infantry and engineering forces operated last night (September 16, 2003), in the city of Rafah, near the Israel-Egypt border.

The purpose of the above-mentioned operation was to uncover weapon smuggling tunnels. As such, IDF forces carried out searches of buildings suspected of concealing tunnels – and discovered one hidden under a building.

During the above-mentioned operation, terrorists hurled grenades, detonated explosives, and shot at IDF forces. As a result, an IDF soldier was lightly wounded – and received first aid on the scene. IDF forces returned fire towards the source of the attack – hitting a number of armed terrorists. After completing the operation, IDF forces demolished the building in which the tunnel was concealed.

It should be noted that over the past year, IDF forces have uncovered 30 weapon smuggling tunnels along the Israel-Egypt border. Indeed, the smuggling of weapons in the Gaza Strip is a primary activity undertaken by various terrorist organizations.
