On Monday evening (July 18), the annual memorial service for IDF (Zahal) soldiers who fell during the Second Lebanon War was held at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.

The service was attended by family members of the fallen soldiers.

Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz and Minister for Home Front Defense Matan Vilnai were among the officials who were present at the service.

“Five years have passed since the terrible day when your lives took such a sharp turn,” Vilnai told the bereaved families. “Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done to ease the pain or soften the sorrow over those who fell in battle.”

“Our best fighters joined the historic lineage of the people of Israel stretching out over thousands of years,” Vilnai added. “Israel’s history is interwoven with the stories of heroic leaders and fighters.”

“In the Second Lebanon War, the strong arm of the IDF (Zahal) brought almost total silence to the Lebanon border and provided the residents of northern Israel with security and protection,” Vilnai continued.
