During a routine IDF (Zahal) activity on Saturday night (Feb. 27) in Gush Ezyon in the Judea and Samaria region, Palestinians hurled firebombs and rocks at IDF (Zahal) soldiers from a nearby street. The soldiers fired back towards the rioters, and in addition fired at a vehicle that was spotted leaving the scene and aroused the suspicion of the acting commander. One Palestinian was moderately injured and three others were lightly injured by the shooting.

The IDF (Zahal), in cooperation with the liaison office of the Civil Administration, which is in touch with the relevant Palestinian medical officials, has offered medical assistance in addition to conveying its regret over the incident.

From an initial investigation that was held by the Etzyon Regional Brigade Commander, Col. Eran Makov, it appears that the soldiers did not follow the IDF (Zahal)’s strict rules of engagement.

As a result, the Judea and Samaria Regional Division Commander, Brig. Gen. Nitzan Alon, suspended the commander of the force in question, a reserves officer at the rank of Lieutenant, until a more thorough investigation will be concluded. Following the investigation, further steps will be considered. Furthermore, Brig. Gen. Alon ordered that all forces operating in the Judea and Samaria region will be re-briefed on the rules of engagement.

The IDF (Zahal) wishes to convey its regret over any incident causing harm to civilians not associated with terrorism.
