“After all options were turned down, it was decided to board the yacht,” IDF (Zahal) Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai said on Tuesday (July 19) following the interception of the Al-Karame vessel by Israeli naval forces. “”We understood that the captain was lying. He lied to authorities in Greece about the yacht’s destination and changed it from Egypt to Gaza. We understood that he was taking responsibility away from himself for the yacht.”

Brig. Gen. Mordechai said that no physical friction occurred between passengers and IDF (Zahal) soldiers during the boarding operation.

The boarding passed peacefully and the passengers were transferred to another boat to be taken to the port in Ashdod.

“The event passed peacefully, but it is not over yet,” Brig. Gen. Mordechai said. “It will end when the passengers arrive in Ashdod.”

“After dialogue reached a dead end, naval commandos boarded the yacht and took control of it without facing resistance,” Brig. Gen. Mordechai continued.

Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz oversaw the operation.

“The IDF (Zahal) has been monitoring the ship since last Saturday,” Brig. Gen. Mordechai said. “We knew there were 16 passengers onboard seeking to create a provocation, without any connection to providing assistance to the residents of the Gaza Strip.”
