Participating in a panel at the Globes Business Conference, IDF (Zahal) Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yoav (Poly) Mordechai spoke of the achievements of the Spokesperson’s Unit during Operation Pillar of Defense, emphasizing that “we are already prepared for the next war, whose main challenge will be swiftness.”

Brig. Gen. Mordechai added that “we’re not patting ourselves on the back from the last operation. Militarily, we understand that this was a time-limited operation. We made mistakes—and where we err, we correct ourselves.” Brig. Gen. Mordechai mentioned the advocacy work of other groups in the state, saying, “naturally, when the state begins an operation, the military action dominates. Relative to past operations, the IDF (Zahal) Spokesperson’s Unit is still the dominant [advocacy force] in a military operation.”

Brig. Gen. Mordechai also referred to the unit’s Arabic language activity, emphasizing that “we operate an Arabic website, but it is hard to be interviewed by Al-Jazeera. They put up background images of children who’ve been killed, and you know that it’s actually from Syria or a previous war. We discovered that when we tell the local residents in Arabic what we are doing, we receive a high score in terms of our credibility relative to the Arabic media. It is important for us to explain that we’re not fighting the people, but Hamas.”

Brig. Gen. Mordechai noted that “what will be different in the next war is the understanding that the IDF (Zahal) will need to operate a very large force at the start of the operation, and achieve objectives in as short a time as possible. The longer the operation goes on, the greater the challenge we encounter—also in terms of public opinion.”
