A short while ago, IAF aircraft and armored corps soldiers targeted a terrorist squad that was planting an explosive device near the security fence in the northenr Gaza Strip. Hits were confirmed.

An explosion was identified, originating from the explosive device the terrorists attempted to plant near the security fence with the intention of harming IDF (Zahal) soldiers.

This is the second incident in 2012, following approximately 30 similar incidents over the course of 2011.

“The explosive was placed on the fence and the detonation created 10-15 meters of smoke,” said Deputy Company Commander and tank commander, Lt. Eliran Benhemo. “The explosives was quite heavy and the explosion could have harmed IDF (Zahal) soldiers.”

“Our goal is not to be surprised. We are prepared for similar incidents and the soldiers go through training so that during an operation everyone will know exactly what to do. The soldiers understand the final goal- to defend civilians,” he added.

The last attack at the Gaza Strip took place last month when IAF aircraft attacked a terror smuggling tunnel in northern Gaza and another terror site in the central Gaza Strip. A direct hit was recognized and all the aircraft returned safely. The attack was in response to rockets fired at Israel communities from the Gaza Strip.

The IDF (Zahal) will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians, and will operate against anyone who uses terror against the State of Israel. The Hamas terror organization is solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from the Gaza Strip.
