The new grenade launcher nicknamed Makelron (small stick) and Maklar Ra’am (thunderous launcher) is expected to be in use in IDF (Zahal) units by 2011. The Makleron, the fruit of GOC Army Headquarters Technology Division’s labor is currently being tested and will take the place of the current grenade launcher first in elite units and eventually in the rest of the army.
The new grenade launcher will include many new developments. Among them is its weight, standing at 47 kg with all external equipment, 30 kg lighter than the previous grenade launcher.
“This is a much more precise weapon,” says 1st Sgt. Aharon Mimoni, operations officer in the infantry department at the School for Infantry Corps Professions and Squad Commanders (SICPSC), “the accuracy allows for more direct hits and a good shooter won’t miss after using the launcher twice.”
Three IDF (Zahal) units are currently trying out the new grenade launcher: SICPSC and elite units Egoz and Sayeret Matkal. The launchers are going through different shooting experiments while courses and classes are being built for their smooth integration in future teaching. Also, a special night vision system is being built which will help those using it hit with more precision at nighttime as well.
