Israeli Minister of Defense, Ehud Barak, addressed the Iron Dome’s successful interception of Grad rockets launched toward Ashkelon on Friday (Apr. 8). “This is an exceptional achievement of the Israeli security industry and the aerial defense system,” he said and expressed his appreciation for the air force and the security industry, specifically Rafael Advancved Security Systems (responsible for developing the system).
The Minister of Defense even commended the Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, on his steadfast belief in deploying the first battery of the Iron Dome to protect civilians even in its trial period. He emphasized the fact that, “the trial period continues but we must remember that we are still far from a solution. I’m positive that the Iron Dome’s many achievements will settle ongoing arguments about a need for a widespread, far-reaching anti-rocket system.”
Minister Barak said this following IAF combat soldiers’ (operating the anti-rocket Iron Dome system) successful interception of three rockets launched toward the city of Ashkelon on Friday (Apr. 8). One rocket exploded in open territory. There were no casualties nor was any damage caused.
On Thursday (Apr. 7), soldiers operating the Iron Dome successfully intercepted another rocket launched from the Gaza Strip toward Israel. With that, the Home Front Command has instructed residents of Israel’s southern cities to continue being alert saying citizens of both Be’er Sheba and Ashkelon must continue entering protected spaces when the siren is sounded.
