The Independence Day ceremony of the IDF (Zahal) General Staff Forum took place Thursday (Apr. 15), in the presence of the Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi and the Minister of Defense, Mr. Ehud Barak.
“A year of standing up to wide-ranged challenges is expected of us, and we must be prepared at all times, while looking to the border in the North, the South, and in the center of the country,” said Ashkenazi. “It can be said that in the past year we made it possible for residents of the State of Israel to live normal, quiet and safe lives here. This is a result of brave work, on the part of IDF (Zahal) soldiers in regular and reserve duty. With pain we recall that it was not free of cost, of people who understand their destiny and the honor of the challenge. I am proud to say with modesty that there have been successes.”
The Chief of the General Staff added that he puts his trust and faith in the solders and commanders of the IDF (Zahal). He closed by saying that the mission of returning kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit, and all other soldiers missing in action, still stands before him.
Minister of Defense Ehud Barak said that “On this day we can look on with pride at the accomplishments we have made, and look on to the future. The General Staff Forum is one that the public looks to. This year many exceptional accomplishments were fulfilled, and all of us have faith in the fact that the security forces can respond to complicated challenges which demand responsibility and deliberation, in order to ensure firm and alert preparedness.”
At the end of the ceremony, those present raised a glass to the IDF (Zahal), the security forces, and the State of Israel.
