The Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, Mr. Ehud Barak, ratified the decision of the Chief of Staff, Maj. Gen. Shaul Mofaz, to appoint Lt. Col. Rabbi Israel Weiss to the position of Chief Military Rabbi. Rabbi Israeli Weiss will be promoted to the rank of General upon his appointment.

Rabbi Weiss was recruited to the IDF in 1976 and served in diverse positions, among which are: Battalion Rabbi, Brigade Rabbi, and Rabbi of the “Iron Formation” in the central command.

He later served as deputy to the Rabbi of the Central Command. In the last eight years he served as a Rabbi of the Army HQ.

Rabbi Weiss studied in the “Merkaz Harav” Yeshiva in Jerusalem and in the Harry Fichell Institute for Rabbinical Studies.

Born in 1949, he currently resides in Jerusalem, is married and father to 3 girls.
