The members of the Security Cabinet, led by the Israeli Prime Minister, Mr. Binyamin Netanyahu, visited the IDF (Zahal) Home Front Command Headquarters as part of the Turning Point 3 national emergency drill.
The cabinet members received different briefings by the IDF (Zahal) Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, the Deputy Minister of Defense, Mr. Matan Vilnai, and the GOC Home Front Command, Maj. Gen. Yair Golan.
The Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, stressed the importance of resilience on the Israeli home front during times of emergency and the need in continuing to strengthen all emergency and rescue services alongside the regional authorities, by means of ongoing cooperation, the evaluation of shortcomings, and the constant implementation of lessons learnt.
The Prime Minister stated that the security cabinet will devote several discussions to the issue of home front readiness in times of emergency. Mr. Netanyahu also stressed that this is a large scale and routine exercise that was planned far in advance.
Prime Minister Netanyahu also cited the need to combine most existing bodies in order to assist the Home Front Command in emergencies; he also said that he intends to broaden the National Service programs so that they include different population groups from the various sectors who will assist in coaching and directing the public, as well as aid the Home Front Command and emergency authorities in their areas.
Lt. Gen. Ashkenazi reviewed the framework of the exercise in front of the cabinet members and stated that the Home Front as a “second front line” for the IDF (Zahal) during times of war.
The Chief of the General Staff clarified the IDF (Zahal)’s policy regarding “a wide approach to strengthening the home front,” by which the IDF (Zahal) assists local authorities in non-military fields such as education, health, community management, etc.
GOC Home Front Command, Maj. Gen. Yair Golan, presented the cabinet members with the framework of the exercise, its goals and required achievements. In addition, Maj. Gen. Golan presented the lessons learnt from the Second Lebanon War and Operation Cast Lead, in addition to highlighting the progress in implementing these lessons learnt. Maj. Gen. Golan also dedicated a part of his presentation to the high level of readiness.
The Deputy Minister of Defense, Mr. Matan Vilnai, updated the guests on the actions taken by the National Emergency Authority and the cooperation between the Home Front Command, the various emergency and rescue services, and the local authorities.
The members of the Security Cabinet visited the main command center of the Home Front Command in order to be further familiarized with the drill and its general framework.
