Today, thousands of runners took to the runways of the Hatzerim airbase, as the Israel Air Force held its fourth annual fitness race. In this year’s run, soldiers and officers attempted to win the personal and group titles in the five- and 10-kilometer categories.
The race marked the conclusion of several weeks of athletic events held in honor of the IDF (Zahal)’s Health and Fitness month.
“The race represents the cultural shift in the Israeli public in general and in the [Air] Force in particular,” said Brig. Gen. Amikam Norkin, Commander of the Aerial Formation. “It doesn’t matter what your profession is, whether you’re a technician or an air crew member – it’s important that you know how to combine professionalism, the enjoyment of sports, and a healthy lifestyle.”
“Running on the asphalt that absorbs thousands of liters of fuel is a great feeling,” he added.
This year’s race was held at the southern Hatzerim airbase, and despite the distance and high temperatures, participants were undeterred and arrived from all around the country. “People come to the race because of the IAF’s formidable image, which distinguishes it from other races,” explained IAF Physical Training Officer Lt. Col. Zvi Peleg.
