In accordance with security assessments, and in light of the murderous suicide bombing in Jerusalem (August 19, 2003), which killed 20 Israeli civilians and wounded over 130, a general closure in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip was decided upon.

Passage will be permitted only in humanitarian cases, in coordination with the Liaison offices.

The West Bank
This past week, IDF forces arrested 82 wanted Palestinians and detained them for questioning. In addition, 28 instances of gunfire against IDF forces were reported — and three explosive devices were detonated towards IDF forces.

IDF forces demolished the house of Hamis Razi Faisal Jaruan in the Nablus Askar refugee camp.

Jaruan, a Fatah operative, carried out the August 12, 2003, Rosh Ha’ayin suicide bombing that killed one Israeli civilian and wounded nine others.

    • Muhammad Sider, the head of the Islamic Jihad in Hebron, was killed during attempts by Israeli security forces to arrest him in the house he was hiding in.

      Muhammad Sider was responsible for the deaths of 19 Israelis and the wounding of 82 others. In addition, Sider was responsible for the death of two TIPH observers and the wounding of a third.

      Israeli security forces called for the wanted terrorist to exit the building and turn himself in. The terrorist refused, and an exchange of fire ensued between the terrorist and Israeli security forces.

      During the exchange of fire, a number of explosions occurred inside the building – probably due to the presence of a signifcant amount of explosive material.

      The terrorist also hurled fragmentation grenades, and killed a bomb-sniffing dog who had entered the building to search the area.

      During searches of the above-mentioned house, IDF forces uncovered chemicals and explosive materials used to manufacture explosive devices. The chemicals and explosive materials were detonated in a controlled explosion by IDF sappers.

    • IDF forces operating in Beit Farouk, east of Nablus, seized a 15-20 kilogram explosive device attached to a gas balloon. The explosive device was detonated in a controlled explosion by IDF sappers.
  • IDF forces demolished the house of the Hamas operative who carried out the August 12, 2003, suicide bombing at the entrance to Ariel. One Israeli civilian was killed and three others wounded in the terrorist attack.

An Israeli civilian travelling on the highway between Kedumim and Yitzhar (south of Nablus) was lightly-to-moderately wounded by terrorist gunfire.

During an investigation of Muhammoud Daoud Tahina, IDF forces uncovered a 10 kilogram explosive device and shrapnel. The explosive device was slated to be used in a Haifa suicide bombing.

    • IDF forces began operating late last night in the Nablus area.

      In an effort to thwart terrorist attacks planned to emanate from the area, IDF forces carried out searches and arrests.

      During the above-mentioned searches, IDF forces seized TATP explosive material, a gas balloon, screws, and nails.

    • IDF forces demolished the the house of Raed Abed El-Hamid Misq in Hebron. Misq, a Hamas terrorist, carried out the August 19, 2003, suicide bombing in Jerusalem which killed 20 Israeli civilians and wounded over 130 others.
    • In the village of Al Yamun, west of Jenin, IDF forces demolished the house of Ahmad Ali Maflah Aba’ahara. Aba’ahara, an Islamic Jihad terrorist, carried out the June 19, 2003, suicide bombing in a Sdey Trumot mini market. One Israeli civilian was killed in the attack.
    • In the village of Hares, north west of Hebron, IDF forces demolished the house of Ali Abu Basma. Basma, an Islamic Jihad terrorist, carried out the March 19, 2002, shooting attack in the Israeli community of Aviezer. Two Israeli Border Police volunteers were injured in the attack.
  • In the village of Raai, south west of Jenin, IDF forces demolished the house of Ahmad Hiri Fathi Yahia. Yahia, an Islamic Jihad terrorist, carried out the July 7, 2003, suicide bombing in the Israeli village of Yaabatz. One Israeli civilian was killed in the attack — which took place in a private home.

The Gaza Strip
Four mortars were launched towards Israeli communties in the Gaza Strip. In addition, four anti-tank missiles were fired at IDF forces, and dozens of instances of gunfire against IDF forces were recorded.
