On Monday afternoon (August 16), IDF (Zahal) and ISA forces thwarted an attempted bombing by the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization, which tried to place an explosive device on the security fence in Southern Gaza. Forces identified the terrorists and opened fire in their direction, resulting in the death of one Islamic Jihadist. An IDF (Zahal) soldier was lightly wounded from fire by Islamic Jihad forces and was evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical care.

During the event, which occurred near Khan Yunis, Islamic Jihadist Basem Da’ama was killed. Da’ama, a resident of Absan, was a prominent field operative who took part in the March 26 exchange of fire resulting in the deaths of IDF (Zahal) Maj. Eliraz Peretz and Sgt. First Class Ilan Sviatkovsky.

Terrorist organizations generally use the area near the fence as a location for planting explosives and executing planned attacks and kidnapping attempts, and therefore the IDF (Zahal) practices a high level of precaution in the area.
