Yesterday afternoon (8 Jan. 2003), an IDF force on routine patrol along the Israel-Syria border in the Golan Heights, encountered a terrorist cell that had infiltrated Israeli territory. The terrorists opened fire toward the IDF force. There were no casualties among the IDF soldiers.

The IDF soldiers returned fire, killing one of the terrorists. The second terrorist was captured and turned over for further investigation. During the investigation it came to light that the two were Syrian soldiers dressed as civilians.

Shortly after the terrorist was captured, shots were fired from the Syrian side of the border, which continued sporadically for an hour. It must be noted that at no time did IDF forces return fire toward the sources of the shooting on the Syrian side of the border.
