The Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Moshe Ya’alon, has re-emphasized a previous directive to instruct IDF personnel about the prohibition against hitch-hiking.

This action has been taken due to intelligence warnings, as well as the recent murder of Corporal Oleg Shaichat – who was abducted after hitch-hiking back to his house.

In a special directive to the General Staff, the Israeli Chief of Staff ordered commanders at all levels to raise awareness of the threat posed by hitch-hiking.

This will be accomplished via an information campaign that will explain the dangers of hitch-hiking. In addition, the campaign will review the above-mentioned directive re-emphasizing the prohibition against hitch-hiking.

It should be noted that the Chief of Staff ordered that the prohibition against hitchiking be strictly enforced – and that punishments will be meted out to those who transgress this order.
