Former minister Yosef Shapira passed away on Saturday at the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer at the age of 87.

Shapira was a member of the Matzad (Religious Zionist Camp) Party and served as a minister-without portfolio in the national unity government headed by Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Shamir between 1984 and 1988.

Shapira headed the Youth and Aliyah Department at the Jewish Agency and was also one of the founders of World Bnei Akiva. He headed the religious Zionist movement`s secretariat for over two decades.

The late minister worked in various capacities to strengthen Jewish identity among children, youth and young Jewish adults in Israel and the world.
