The President of Guatemala, Otto Perez Molina, the Foreign Minister and other ministers from the country in Central America visited the Knesset.

The delegation was warmly greeted by Deputy Speaker of the Knesset MK Yoni Chetboun (HaBayit HaYehudi) and MKs Aliza Lavie (Yesh Atid), Eliezer Stern (HaTenua) and Moshe Mizrahi (Labor), Director General of The Knesset Ronen Plot and Managing Executive Yardena Miller-Horowitz.

This is the first time that the head of Guatemala has visited Israel.

During the meeting there were mutual expressions of the value of the deep friendship that the Guatemalan and Israeli governments have shared through the years (Guatemala was one of the first states who supported the partition plan and among the first to recognize Israel).

MK Chetboun remarked that while neighboring countries are experiencing major uprisings, Israel is the only country in the region which is stable. The guests agreed with his words and expressed hope that Israel will reach understandings and peace deals with the neighboring countries. The two sides spoke of the threats against Israel and the MKs expressed their appreciation of the no-compromise approach that Guatemala has taken towards terror.

The president and his staff praised Israel`s ability in the fields of technology and invention and expressed a desire to cooperate in these areas as well as others. The guests invited Israeli travelers to continue to visit the country and MK Stern invited Guatemalan youth to visit and enjoy Israel.
