JUBILEE OF THE WORLD ZIONIST  ORGANIZATION

The year 1947 marked the jubilee of the World Zionist Organization. The blue-and-white Zionist flag, soon to become the flag of the State of Israel, was displayed next to the flag proposed by the movement’s founder, Theodor (Binyamin Ze’ev) Herzl. Establishment of the State fulfilled Herzl’s 1897 prophecy that he founded the Jewish State in Basle, Switzerland, at the First Zionist Congress.

Ze’ev (Vladimir) Jabotinsky, writer and Zionist leader, was born in Russia in 1880 and died in the United States in 1940. He initiated the idea of Jewish volunteer combat units in the British army — the Jewish Legion of World War I. Leader of the Revisionist movement in Zionism, admired by many, he was an activist who foresaw the Nazi Holocaust and tried to persuade European Jews to come to the Land of Israel before World War II. (1921)

   BEN-GURION, THE  UNCONQUERABLE

David Ben-Gurion was the central personality of the Jewish community in the Land of Israel. He served as Chairman of the Jewish Agency, as the first Prime Minister of Israel, and as Defense Minister. The "old man", as he was known, was a popular figure, and many people admired and identified with him. He put his clear stamp on a range of Israeli institutions, among them the army, public education, healthcare facilities, and various forms of mutual assistance in Israeli society. (1950s)

Members of the Jewish community in the Land of Israel were urged to enlist in the British armed forces. In 1942, German troops commanded by Field-Marshal Erwin Rommel advanced into Egypt. The threat this presented to the Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel sparked appeals for mass enlistment into the British forces defending the Middle East. (World War II)

   WOMEN, JOIN THE ARMY

Women also were urged to enlist in the other women’s auxiliary unites of British forces, to help in various roles. Thousands of young women undertook the challenge in many units, mainly in Egypt and the Land of Israel. (World War II)
