Knesset Speaker Yuli-Yoel Edelstein met with President of the Italian Senate Pietro Grasso at the Israeli parliament on Monday. Prior to the meeting, Grasso and members of his delegation were greeted by the Knesset Guard. Grasso then signed the guestbook in Chagall Hall.
At the onset of the meeting in Speaker Edelstein`s office, Grasso said he was grateful for the ”celebratory and touching” welcome he received.
”It was moving for me to stand beside the memorial for fallen IDF soldiers (in the Knesset plaza),” he said. ”Out of sacrifice and grief rose the State of Israel, which is an island of stability for the western world.”
Knesset Speaker Edelstein told his guest: ”Your visit with us symbolizes the good relations between our countries and between the parliaments in Italy and Israel. But on a personal level, I was thrilled that you chose to visit the families of the abducted teenagers and expressed your sympathy for them and shock over the incident.”
”To my regret, not every leader does this; it makes us value your friendship and appreciation for Israel and Israeli democracy even more,” Edelstein continued. ”I am convinced that during your visit we will promote the relations between our countries and parliaments with regards to issues such as education, environment, gender equality, children, youth and many other issues we have in common.”
MK Orly Levi-Abekasis, who chairs the Israel-Italy Parliamentary Friendship Group, also attended the meeting with Grasso.
