During a meeting of the Knesset Presidium on Monday, Knesset Speaker Yuli-Yoel Edelstein addressed the numerous reports in the media regarding the presidential election, saying ”I have read about the various theories in the press regarding the presidential election, but they do not reflect in any way what I am aware of.”
”As I have said in the past, this week, the first week of the (Knesset`s summer) session, I will hold consultations and a round of talks with all those who announced their intention to run (for president). Next week I will announce the (exact) date on which the presidential elections will be held in the next few weeks,” he added.
Knesset Speaker Edelstein said the few-weeks notice was required to allow all Knesset members to prepare for the vote and assure a full house, with strict adherence to the rules.
The President of the State of Israel is elected to a seven-year term by a majority of the Knesset in a secret ballot.
