The Knesset on Wednesday held a debate on a motion for the agenda regarding the rocket fire on Israeli towns emanating from Gaza.
MK Haim Jelin (Yesh Atid) said ”Operation Protective Edge has not ended. Wars are never finished by armies, they are finished by an arrangement that provides quiet and security for the inhabitants.”
MK Basel Ghattas (Joint Arab List) remarked ”The conditions of the biggest prison in the world have not changed and you are amazed as to why there is a boycott of Israel? The Israeli government, which has its head in the sand, bears the responsibility for what is happening in Gaza. The boycott is just the beginning of the beginning of the process that there is no going back from. As long as Israel continues with the occupation the boycott will continue – and justifiably so.”
MK Zehava Galon (Meretz) said ”A reality where missiles are flying over the heads of citizens is not something that can be done away with the term `trickle“ and to move on. What we see now is a result of the lack of policy of the Government of Israel in Gaza. There is not a military figure in the country who does not say that Hamas is the lesser of two evils. The time has come to understand that Gaza is not going to disappear, and our interest is in a functioning and prosperous Gaza.”
Mordhay Yogev (Habayit Hayehudi) said ”Exactly a decade ago we stood here in the Knesset and said that the disengagement would bring terror. Anyone who is a man of truth cannot deny these things. The way to arrive to a civilian Gaza is by subduing terror and Hamas.”
MK Sharon Gal (Yisrael Beitenu) insisted that ”The reality is disturbing and intolerable. Hamas is rebuilding its strength anew. It is allowing itself and other terror groups to fire on Israel and we are handing the most important card to the enemy – selecting a time. When they are ready they will escalate and we must live by their whims. We are filled with excuses heard after every shot. Have we gone mad? We must succeed in the test. A decisive war that will exact a higher price is needed.”
Deputy Minister of Defense Eli Ben-Dahan (Habayit Hayehudi) responded on behalf of the government: ”At this time, Hamas is the only address in Gaza, and it is deterred and does not want to allow the situation to deteriorate. The security establishment does not recognize the concept of `trickle`, but rather of firing, and even one single shot is unacceptable and we punish for it dearly.”
”Regarding the words of MK Ghattas, it is a shame for the Israeli Knesset that there sits within it a member that calls for the boycott of Israel; this would not happen in any other parliament,” he added.
MK Avigdor Liberman (Yisrael Beitenu) said ”The government of Israel has made a dramatic change – surrender to terror. Qatar is the main sponsor of Hamas and the government of Israel agreed that the Qatari ambassador could visit Gaza to provide money for projects and to strengthen Qatar`s hold in Gaza. Egypt has never allowed the Qataris to enter Gaza by its passage. This is another surrender of the government and a mark of Cain for the government of Israel.”
