In a motion for the agenda submitted on Wednesday, MK Nissim Zeev (Shas) raised the issue of Jews who were expelled from Arab countries and are defined as refugees. The MK noted that he had previously sponsored a bill to compensate those Jews who left behind property in the countries they were expelled from.
Zeev suggested that in the framework of the peace negotiations Israel demand compensation for Jews whose property was stolen. The MK accused the government of ignoring the issue and called on the Knesset to discuss it.
”The government has been ignoring the Jewish Nakba for decades,” Zeev added.
Responding on behalf of the government, Deputy Foreign Minister MK Zeev Elkin said there is no doubt the issue should be an important part of any negotiations.
Fourteen MKs voted in favor of transferring the discussion on the issue to one of the Knesset`s committees.
