Yakubu Dogara, the Speaker of Nigeria`s House of Representatives, visited the Knesset on Monday as the guest of Speaker Yuli-Yoel Edelstein.
After being greeted by an honor guard, Dogara signed the Knesset guestbook in Chagall State Hall.
MK Yoav Kisch (Likud), chairman of the Israel-Nigeria Parliamentary Friendship Group, took part in the work meeting between Dogara and Edelstein.
The Knesset speaker informed his Nigerian counterpart that the visit was taking place on the day the Israeli parliament was marking the 20th anniversary of the assassination of prime minister and defense minister Yitzhak Rabin.
”I hope and believe that we will increase the cooperation between our parliaments in various fields,” Edelstein said.
Dogara said he had come to the Knesset as the ”head of a large and respectable delegation of parliament members,” adding ”this is not a courtesy call, and I am convinced that this visit will give a significant push to the good relations between us and to the cooperation between the Knesset and the Nigerian parliament.”
During his visit, Dogara was also scheduled to meet with MKs Avraham Naguisa and Avi Dichter (both from Likud). The Nigerian official and members of his delegation were set to take a tour of the Knesset, with an emphasis on the ”Green Knesset” project.
