Honorable 5th President of the State of Israel and chairman of the panel of judges, Mr. Yitzhak Navon,
My friends,
Minister of Education, Mr. Gideon Sa’ar, and Mayor of Jerusalem, Mr. Nir Barkat,
IDF Chief Education and Youth Officer, Brig. Gen. Eli Shermeister,
IDF Chief Rabbi, Brig. Gen. Avihai Ronsky,
Quiz Participants,
Distinguished Guests,
Citizens of Israel who are watching us now,

This month we sat around the Pesach table, fulfilling the commandment of "and you shall tell your son" regarding the exodus from Egypt and its significance.  However, this commandment is incumbent upon each and every Jew not only during Pesach, but on all days of the year.  The commandment to delve deep into the mysteries of the Book of Eternity is right and meaningful on all days of the year.

To me, there is no experience more inspiring or exhilarating than that of a father teaching his son a chapter of the Bible.  I highly recommend it, although you must take into account the possibility that the child would end up teaching the father. There is nothing more exciting than a grandfather revealing to his grandson a story and its lesson hidden inside the pages of the Book of Books.

In this context, I wish to say a few personal words.  At this moment, my father in law, Hemi, Shmuel Ben-Artzi, is watching us, and I take this opportunity to wish him health and a long life.  Shmuel is one of Israel’s veteran educators and Bible teachers. He has written many books, including ones about Bible Quizzes he loved, in which three of his sons participated and won.  I believe education at home is important, even very important, but it cannot be a substitute for school education. I believe much more must be done in the field of Bible studies at our schools, and we will do it.

The Bible is the very essence and foundation of the existence and spirit of the Jewish people. It is also the single most important, remarkable and moving piece ever written. We must therefore give the Bible its proper place on the list of the most meaningful professions taught at our schools, and it is my commitment to you that we will do more on this issue as well.

Again, I congratulate the winners and all the contestants.  I am proud of you and am anxiously awaiting the next Bible Quiz finals, next year in Jerusalem.
I wish to thank the legendary host of the Bible Quiz, Dr. Avshalom Kor.

Thank you very much. Happy Independence Day.
