“For the first time in many years, Israel is almost completely surrounded by threats.” These were the words of Chief of the IDF (Zahal) Intelligence Directorate Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, who spoke last week about increasing hostility toward Israel throughout the Middle East. The first month of the new year was accompanied by many security challenges, with Israel seeing a significant increase in the number of attacks and terrorist activities on all fronts.
The south saw a dramatic increase in rocket attacks this month. Since the new year, terrorists in the Gaza Strip have launched 28 rockets at Israel. In response to these attacks, and in an attempt to eliminate an imminent threat to the lives of Israel’s civilians, the IDF (Zahal) successfully targeted Palestinian terrorist Ahmad Sa’ad and several terror sites in Gaza. Sa’ad was a key Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative in the Gaza Strip who was personally responsible for the launching of five rockets towards Ashkelon earlier this month (on January 16), which were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.
