For the first time this year, mosquitoes infected with West Nile Virus have been detected in Israel. They were found during routine checks by the Ministry of Environmental Protection last week – in the south of Israel, at the Arava Terminal near Eilat and in palm tree plantations in Eilot – and in the north, in Nahal Iron. Environmental Protection Minister Amir Peretz has ordered an increase in surveillance and in pest control actions in those areas. The ministry has also let local authorities in the areas know about their discovery, and has sent them guidelines to minimize the risk.
