Following are Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s remarks at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting today:

"Today, the Cabinet will discuss events in the south and in the Gaza Strip in the wake of continued Kassam fire.  To this end, IDF Chief-of-Staff Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz and ISA Director Yuval Diskin will brief us.  To the extent necessary, we will make decisions on strengthening Sderot and the other communities near the Gaza Strip.

We will continue to do what we need in order to assist those at the forefront of the struggle, facing Kassam fire in the south.  I would like to add, especially in light of this past Friday’s UN General Assembly resolution, that I view it severely and that the entire Cabinet expresses its full confidence and trust in the security forces, in the IDF and in Chief-of-Staff Lt.-Gen. Halutz.  We have no doubt that it is the State of Israel which must respond to attacks on civilians.  We have expressed our deepest regret over this.  But those who preach morality and roll their eyes have yet to see fit to initiate a resolution in condemnation of those who are shooting with the goal of hitting civilians as a long-range, systematic policy."
