Following is the statement by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert at the start of the cabinet meeting:

“On behalf of the entire Government, I wish to send our condolences and share in the grief of the families of the fallen, and wish a speedy and full recovery to the wounded.  Our hearts are with the IDF soldiers wherever they are.

Approximately one hour ago, the Minister of Defense and I met with the Goldwasser and Regev families, whose sons, Udi and Eldad, are being held hostage by Hizbullah terrorists.

We updated the families regarding the Security Council resolution and on the steps Israel is taking.  As I said before, Israel has done, is doing and will do everything in its power to ensure that the boys come home quickly, and of course, we will continue in our efforts to free Gilad Shalit as well.

This morning, the Government will hear a review of the military situation from the IDF, and also a review of Security Council Resolution 1701.”
