A Norseman leaves Sde Dov in the morning hours, on a bombing mission against the Arab village of Bayt Mahsir in the Jerusalem Corridor. For reasons that were never made clear, the plane crashes south of Deir ‘Amer (today’s Kiryat Ye’arim) and its six crewmen – Yariv Sheinbaum, Daniel Buchstein, Shlomo Cohen, Shlomo Rotstein, Tzvi Shusterman and Yitzhak Mordechai Shkalnevich – are killed. A monument was created from the plane’s burnt remains, near the crash site. It serves to this day as a place where the IAF remembers its fallen, and is known as ‘Har Hatayasim’ – ‘Pilots’ Mountain’.
