Lieutenant General Gornec at an “Iron Dome” battery Lieutenant General Frank Gorenc, Commander of the Third Air Force, visited an “Iron Dome” battery, experienced a combat simulation and received a look at an “Arrow” battery. The purpose of the visit: stronger military cooperation between Israel and the U.S in preparation of a joint exercise
Lieutenant General Frank Gorenc, Commander of the Third Air Force of the U.S Military, arrived for a visit in Israel and toured an “Iron Dome” battery, “Palmachim” airbase and the ITB facility in Holon, which simulates the operations of aerial defense systems at war. The Lieutenant General arrived in order to strengthen the ties and coordination between the forces in preparation for the AC (“Austere Challenge”) exercise which will be carried out next year.
The Lieutenant General, who in his current role commands all American forces coordinating with the IDF, is an executive pilot in the U.S Air Force, has commanded on combat squadrons, two wings and the Air Force District of Washington.
“The purpose of the visit is to practice commands and mutual regulations, in the fields as well as in the command center, as a part of preparation for the AC”, says Lieutenant Colonel Dedi Meiri, Commander of the Flight Squadron in the Active Defense Wing. “We’re showing the General the fields, what really goes on in the batteries. Then we’ll practice system cooperation and coordination in the ITB, such as “Arrow” and “David’s Sling””.
The Lieutenant General’s tour began at Battery A’ of the “Iron Dome”, which intercepted a rocket fired toward Israel from the Gaza Strip over the past weekend.
Lieutenant General Gorenc was hosted by Brigadier General Doron Gavish, Commander of the Aerial Defense Formation, who also led the tour. At the battery, the Lieutenant General met with Lieutenant Colonel Gilad Biran, Commander of the “Iron Dome” Unit and with Captain Elad Tzinamon, Commander of the Battery, who explained to him the structure of the battery, how the system works and the “Discovery to Warning” system.
After the tour at the battery and the launching site, the Lieutenant General continued to the ITB combat laboratory in Holon. The lab is designated for development and coordination of the forces and constructing a mutual fighting concept in active defense.
In the laboratory, the Lieutenant General alongside Brigadier General (Res.) Eitan Yariv and Brigadier General Doron Gavish, watched a combat simulation in which the various systems’ responses were displayed. After the visit at ITB, the Lieutenant General continued on to “Palmachim” airbase, where he visited “Sword Shield”-the headquarters of the “Arrow” system.
The “Austere Challenge” which will take place next year, is a joint exercise with the 357 U.S Aerial Defense brigade. The exercise includes practicing together the “Patriot” system.
