Senior Warrant Officer Avi, Commander of Technical Photography Department of the IAF intelligence, participated at the “witness in a uniform” project, two years ago
“Witness in a Uniform” project takes soldiers of the IDF on a tour of the concentration and death camps in Poland, where millions of Jews were murdered during the WWII by the Nazi Regime.
Upon his return, Snr. War. Off. Beker decided to produce a film about his experience there. “My father is a holocaust survivor, but I never wanted to go”, he tells. “I thought that merely by being the son of survivors, I would know everything there is to know about the holocaust. This journey proved me that the opposite is true”.
“There were 240 of us on the tour. We first visited what is left of the area where Jews resided before the war. We tour the local synagogue and the cemetery too. It is clear that a great community lived here once upon a time. The purpose of the tour was to see how the events unfolded to such tragic outcome. We then visited Auschwitz, Majdanek and other camps. I vividly remember a situation at the Auschwitz camp: it was 17:00, it snowed, and even though I wore many layers I was cold. I imagined what it was like to be an eight year old living here. It evoked very difficult emotions in me”.
“I am not a weak person, I went through many things in my life, but this was a very difficult journey. I believe that every Jewish person should visit this place. As a soldier, I represent IDF first and foremost. However, I also felt I represented all of those who did not make it to this day, those whom we owe our existence today”.
