The chairwoman of the Committee on the Status of Women and Gender Equality, MK Aida Touma-Sliman (Joint List), turned to Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein on Wednesday and urged him to order an immediate criminal investigation against Minister of Internal Affairs Silvan Shalom (Likud) over alleged sexual offenses.

In a letter to Weinstein, Touma-Sliman said reports published earlier in the day indicate that police were informed that Minister Shalom had, allegedly, committed sexual offenses against a female subordinate for over a year, but the employee refused to lodge a complaint.

”Such severe claims cannot be left without a proper response and a real examination,” Touma-Sliman said in the letter. ”It is our duty to convey the message that public representatives are not above the law, and that the claims will be checked to see if they are true.”
