On April 19th, 2009, some 7000 soldiers (almost half of them from the air force) went to visit holocaust survivors. The visitations are part of a project led by the Chief Education Officer, Brig. Gen. Eli Shermeister
On their visits, the soldiers awarded the survivors with honorary plaques, in appreciation of their contribution to the building of the country.
“By visiting the survivors, we remind them how much we love and appreciate them, and that there is always someone there to hear their voice and care for them”, says Corporal Din Brand, a soldier with the communications unit of the air force.
In addition to the visits, the soldiers will attend a seminar on the holocaust, aimed at education the soldiers and connecting them with the modern history of the Jewish people.
