“Running on the asphalt that absorbs thousands of liters of fuel is a great feeling”, said Brigadier General Amikam Norkin, Commander of the Aerial Formation, after gunning the thousands of participants in this year’s IAF race. In the fourth annual race, soldiers and officers attempted to win the personal and group titles in the five to ten kilometer categories.
This year’s race was held at the southern Hatzerim Airbase, and despite the distance and high temperatures, participants were not deterred and arrived from all around the country. “People come to the race because of the IAF’s formidable image, which distinguishes it from other races”, explained Lieutenant General Zvi Peleg, Physical Training Officer at the force.
The end of the race marks the end of weeks of athletic events held in honor of the IDF’s Health & Fitness month. “The race represents the cultural shift in the Israeli public in general and in the force particularly”, said Brigadier General Amikam Norkin. “It doesn’t matter what your profession is, whether you’re a technician or an air crew member, it’s important that you know how to combine professionalism, the enjoyment of sports and a healthy lifestyle”.
