The IDF launched operation “Summer Rains”, with the goal to bring about the release of Corporal Gilad Shalit.
Air force jets bombed strategic infrastructure in the Gaza strip.
Corporal Gilad Shalit was abducted on June 25th, 2006 by Hamas in a raid near the Kerem Shalom crossing, and has been held hostage in the Gaza Strip since then.
Parts of the Gaza strip lost electricity as a result of an air-force raid. In addition, three bridges were destroyed.
“Poor weather conditions forced us to conduct several sorties over the targets before releasing ammo, as we did not want to risk missing the target”, tells Captain G. “While destroying the bridges was strategically important to minimize the potential for the transfer of the kidnapped soldier from one part of the Strip to the other, we feared of civilian casualties, and acted with extreme caution”.
The air raid was followed by ground operation, a first since Israel’s unilateral disengagement plan was implemented in late 2005.
The aim of the operations was to cripple all terrorist infrastructure used to kidnap Corp. Shalit.
