A few months ahead of the arrival of the new jet trainer “Aermacchi M-346” – while its Israeli first pilots is studying the new airplane in Italy – Lt. Gen. Gabriele Salvestroni, the Italian Head of Materiel Directorate, came for a special visit to Israel.
“The purpose of my visit is to become more familiar with the IAF, which we see as one of the world’s most advanced forces”, explained Lt. Gen. Salvestroni.
Brig. Gen. Ran Bashevitz, the IAF’s Head of Materiel Directorate and his Italian counterpart, visited the Tel-Nof Airbase, where they toured the squadrons and met with the Aerial Maintenance units.
Lt. Gen. Salvestroni was highly impressed by the force and particularly admired the people of the Technical Division.
“I was pleased to see the young devoted soldiers”, he said. “The cooperation between the young motivated soldiers and the senior professionals is very impressive. Their cooperation is very beneficial and creates an advanced and efficient air force”.
Hand in Hand
In recent years, the cooperation between the air forces has strengthened. In addition to the joint exercises and visits, the defense industries of both countries are sharing their knowledge and acquiring new capabilities, with the help of new many platforms.
“We appreciate the cooperation of our forces and consider the IAF a strong partner. The joint activity is highly important and the benefit is mutual. The ‘Aermacchi M-346’ trainer is a new addition for us too and it is a joint challenge to discover its new capabilities”, adds Lt. Gen. Salvestroni. “In addition, this is a great opportunity for the different industries to work together. The Italian industry has high-performance aircrafts, while the Israeli industry is a leader in the field of high-tech systems. This new airplane, alongside other future platforms, is the way we combine those worlds”.
