Over the past few days, hundreds of rockets have been fired at Israeli territory. Among the “Iron Dome” batteries, which protect against the threat of missiles, is a reservist battery, to which people have been called up from civilian life and other positions in the Air Force to operate. The battery has been deployed to southern Israel and is operated by a diverse group of soldiers: reservists and the staff of the Aerial Defense School, who came to do what they trained for in real time.

“Everyone was mobilized in an impressive manner; each and every one of us understands the immense importance of what we’re doing now”, explains Major Yoav Begir, commander of the active defense track at the school where the cadets undergo their initial training on the system. “From soldiers to senior officers, everyone came from different divisions, we all have different backgrounds, nonetheless, we have all managed to come together and we work together superbly”, adds Major Begir, who currently serves as an officer in the new battery.

“To Protect Israel”

First Lieutenant Shimon Shetah, who currently serves as a platoon commander, is also a course commander at the Aerial Defense School.”Our goal is to protect Israel”, he says. “Everyone understands the importance of our mission and there is a high level of motivation among the people operating the battery, who just want work and help”.

Among the soldiers who came from everywhere in Israel, is Staff Sergeant Shai Wolf, a former boot camp commander at the Aerial Defense School and currently serving as an interceptor at the “Iron Dome” battery.”Last weekend, I was on my pre-release break and they brought me back to the battery”, he says. “Then, they told me I could go back to my break, but I decided to stay. I have always known that the moment they needed me I would drop everything to participate, that’s also the message I conveyed to my soldier. I feel that I am doing something significant and that there won’t be another opportunity to do, to me it’s obvious”.
