This is the seventh year in which astronauts, company CEOs and world-class researchers meet to attempt to predict the future of Space. They discuss various topics, including the question of residing in space, the security issues that concern the entire world, and microsatellites. No topic was left behind.
Science Fiction Films to be Realized?
“We’ve developed shuttles, spaceships, rackets and we’ve even stepped on the moon. But for what?” began Dr. Pete Worden, Head of NASA’s AMES Space Center. “We’re asking ourselves what is our future in Space. We believe that already in the next decades we’ll depart for residencies in Space. Just like the first settlers in America, so will be the residence in Space”. On the way there, NASA researchers fear the worst of all, the realization of Science Fiction movies. “What if there’s already life on Mars or on the other planets we reach? No one can promise that we’ll get along with them”.
Meanwhile, we might want to deal with matters here, close to home, with the Space security issue. “From Space we do critical things that we absolutely cannot do from Earth. You could say that we’re entirely dependent on it”, said Four Star General William Shelton, Commander of the U.S Space Command. “The satellites allow us to remote control platforms in Afghanistan, to move forces and carry out military actions that are significant to us. Most of the military activity is based on GPS use, in weapon guiding as well as force transferring”. These days, it is impossible to get by without Space. “The banks works with it, our homes are linked to it and the world economy as well. There is no way to change this reality”.
“Israel is a Part of the Exclusive Space Club”
In his speech, General Shelton complimented Israel, one of the only countries to launch satellites into Space “You are a part of an Exclusive Space Clubs that only includes ten countries. If I’m not mistaken, there are currently nine satellites of yours in Space-there is no doubt that every one of them is significant”.
Commander of the IAF, Major General Ido Nehoshtan, talked of international cooperation outside the atmosphere. “It is right to search for alliances amongst countries as much as possible”, opened Major General Nehoshtan. “Today we have accomplishments in the field of launching satellites to Space as well”.
Later in his speech, Nehoshtan talked of Israel’s place at a crossroads, “Right now there are three main directions: The ramifications of recent events in the Arab world, a financial downfall in the west and Israel’s place in the Middle East. We’re at a crossroads that did not exist in the past, and in order to be prepared for the next challenge we must invest in the future. I’m convinced that this investment is necessary and strategically correct”.
