The ‘Bedek Institute’, the forerunner of the Israel Aircraft Industries, opens its doors. Bedek was originally intended for servicing the civilian aircraft flown by El Al and other, foreign companies, but the IAF’s maintenance work is also transferred to Bedek, in a retroactive attempt to justify the large sums invested in it. IAF Commander Dan Tolkovsky opposes the change, but his position is rejected by the IDF Staff and by the Ministry of Defense.
