The IAF faces south

The minister of defense, Shaul Mofaz, Chief of Staff, Lt. General Moshe Ya’alon and the IAF commander, General Elyezer Shkedy, signed the declaration

The foundation block of the Nevatim IAF base expansion is laid at the IAF day celebrations. Nevatim would become in the next few years the IAF’s main and largest base.

The minister of defense, Shaul Mofaz, Chief of Staff, Lt. General Moshe Ya’alon and the IAF commander, General Elyezer Shkedy, signed the declaration representing the vision of the base foundation:  “Today, on the 24th of June, 2004, we have gathered to lay the foundation block of a national project that expresses the Israeli government’s decision to encourage and develop the south, by transferring the Lod Air Force base and establishing a transportation wing based and working at the Nevatim.

The project is considered to be the IAF’s greatest infrastructure project since the relocation of bases from Sinai according to the peace treaty with Egypt.

Upon completion of the project, Nevatim would be one of the main bases of the IAF.
