The publication “Department of Emergency Medicine Visits 2014“ is an ongoing Ministry of Health publication proving an indication of the characteristics of people who attend and the characteristics of the activity of departments of emergency medicine in general hospitals. The publication contains information about all general hospitalization hospitals, 28 hospitals, not including hospitals in East Jerusalem. Trends in visit rates to departments of emergency medicine and indicators of activity are presented, in accordance with demographic characteristics and morbidity of persons attending the departments in 2014, and trends over the past decade.
The publication was prepared by the Health Information Division as part of a series of ongoing publications on the activity of hospitals, with the aim of improving service to the public.
Staffed treatment stations
At the end of 2014, there were 1,190 staffed emergency medicine treatment stations, 1,171 of them in general hospitalization hospitals. The number of emergency medicine treatment stations in general hospitals per 1,000 people went down to 0.144, as compared to 0.147 in 2010. The information is based on the licensing of medical institutions database, managed by the Medical Facilities & Equipment Licensing Division in the Ministry of Health, including information on licensing certificates issued by the Ministry of Health to all medical institutions in Israel.
Visit number and rate
In 2014, some 2.9 million visits to departments of emergency medicine were recorded, of which some 2.5 million were non-obstetric visits to all general hospitals. A number of visits exceeding 160,000 was recorded at Soroka, Sourasky, Sheba, Meir and Assaf Harofeh hospitals. Half (48%) of the non-obstetric visits were to government owned hospitals, and one third (35%) were to hospitals owned by Clalit Health Services.
