Tomorrow evening, impatient drivers, chatty high schoolers, playful toddlers and Israel’s 8 million citizens will stop whatever they’re doing and stand still as minute-long sirens blare on Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s memorial day.
On April 21 at 7:55 PM (IST), the IDF (Zahal) Spokesperson’s Unit will live stream the one-minute siren from multiple locations, so that our friends and allies around the world can experience the standstill firsthand. Get alerted when the stream goes live on your Meerkat iPhone app.
Every year, the sirens usher in the beginning of a 24-hour period of mourning and solidarity in remembrance of Israel’s 23,320 fallen soldiers and victims of terror. In just the past year, 116 men and women died. Sixty seven of them killed during this past summer’s Operation Protective Edge. Given Israel’s compulsory military service and population size, many Israelis have a direct, personal connection to fallen servicemen and women and terror victims.
