Lieutenant General Benny Gantz, IDF Chief of Staff, visited Sde Dov airbase yesterday and met officers and soldiers who have been conducting dozens of the reconnaissance flights daily and supporting ground forces. “The campaign is not over and we have a lot of patience, we are preparing other alternatives and so we need you with us”

Dozens of flights have left daily from the Sde Dov airbase as part of Operation “Protective Edge”. Squadrons located at the base provide an intelligence picture and also assist ground forces operating in the Gaza Strip. “I want to thank everyone: the commanders, the aircrews and the technicians. I want to thank everyone taking part in this process, which is very important in my opinion”, said Lieutenant General Benny Gantz, IDF Chief of Staff, during his visit to the airbase.

The IDF Chief of Staff reviewed the progress of the campaign first hand during his visit and described how the IDF and by extension the IAF, are fighting the terrorist organization Hamas. “Overall, the achievements have been very good”, he said. “Hamas’s arsenal had been damaged or intercepted. Its activities have been damaged, its operation infrastructure is being destroyed and we are depriving them of the tunnels it took them years to build. The campaign isn’t over, it will continue. We have a lot of patience and we are preparing other alternatives and so we need you with us”.

“We need to remain operationally fit”

According to Gantz, the campaign will affect the future. “We will see the long-term implications of this process”, he explained. “At no point in time do we have the luxury of being weak in the Middle East. We need to remain operationally fit on each of the fronts”. During the IDF Chief of Staff’s visit, he heard about the activities of the “First” squadron, which has been operating in the skies above the Gaza Strip, performing reconnaissance flights and assisting the forces maneuvering on the ground.

Afterwards, he met with the people who allow the planes to takeoff, the soldiers of the Technical Division of the squadron and the soldiers of the maintenance squadron. “We are continuously active. From Operation ‘Brother’s Keeper’ to Operation ‘Protective Edge’”, he said. “This effort requires a lot of investment from each and every one of us, from me to the last IDF soldiers, regardless of which ever branch of the military. Everyone is an important link in the chain and who knows better than you that when there is a broken link in a chain in an airplane, it won’t takeoff”.
