Hundreds of interceptions over the past few weeks don’t lie: the “Iron Dome” system has demonstrated impressive capabilities in the face of heavy barrages, for which it has been prepared over the past year and a half. “In the Aerial Defense Division, we always make sure to prepare for complex scenarios”, said the Commander of the Aerial Defense Division

Naomi Tzoref

For a number of weeks now, the Aerial Defnse Division has been working incessantly and has been executing its missions, defending the security of the State of Israel with great success. Hundreds of rockets have been fired on communities in southern Israel, some of which have even managed to reach communities beyond central Israel. The soldiers operating the “Iron Dome” batteries, which have been deployed across the country, intercept every target that threatens to harm populated areas and they do everything in their power to allow the residents of Israel to maintain their daily life and of course, to allow the IDF’s combat divisions to conduct their activities without interruption.

“In recent days, a process of significant deterioration has begun”, explained Brigadier General Shahar Shohat, the Commander of the Aerial Defense Division, during his tour of the batteries deployed throughout Israel. For us an escalation was initiated by the firing of barrages past central Israel, attempts to carry out attacks in the area and the discovery of tunnels. That was the opening salvo for us”.

Different from “Pillar of Defense”

A year and a half have passed since Operation “Pillar of Defense”, in which the division demonstrated unprecedented and impressive performance, but the soldiers have not been resting on their laurels. It was clear that the next campaign would be quite different. “We are not standing still”, stresses Brigadier General Shohat. “We have advanced in every possible direction: in quantity, in quality and in training. We always make sure to prepare for scenarios that are more complex than those in the intelligence estimates, so as to reduce the element of surprise. They haven’t managed to surprise us. We have demonstrated fantastic command, which is evident in the excellent achievements so far”.

This campaign is different from Operation “Pillar of Defense” in many ways: from the way it is being managed to the challenges that face the soldiers of the division. “It’s not Operation ‘Pillar of Defense 2’, each side has developed and advanced in its capabilities”, said Brigadier General Shohat. “It seems that even the other side has learned and developed in the time that has passed since the previous operation: the threat today includes heavier barrages than in the past as well as launches of longer ranges.”In many aspects, the Aerial Defense Division and the IAF are one step ahead of the enemy. Nonetheless, it’s important we continue marching forward in order to maintain our advantage. It is clear that a great challenge lies before us, but it is important to remember that the IDF and the IAF have many more tools in their arsenal”.

The People Who Determine The Battle

Yesterday, the Commander of the Aerial Defense Division visited batteries that have been deployed across Israel and he referred to the events that have taken place over the past few days.”Ultimately, you are the ones that will determine the battle. The people in the field: the ‘Iron Dome’ soldiers, the navy men and women who control patrols, the intelligence officers and combat soldiers from the ground forces, you make the difference between success and failure. It’s clear that the test still lies ahead; our victory is our serviceability, availability and high functionality. You have to help in all that you can and to be alert all the time”.
