A man convicted of abusing his neighbor’s dog has received a 13-month sentence and NIS 4,000 fine. He could be released after half a year. The Tel Mond resident stabbed the dog with a knife in June 2015. This is the most severe sentence ever handed down as the result of an animal abuse case filed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Israel Police.

The dog was wounded in the neck and badly bruised, and required life-saving surgery. The animal was saved when a neighbor saw what was happening and called on other neighbors to put a stop to the attack.
The defendant, who was known to the police, ultimately confessed. During his hearing, he expressed sorrow for what he had done, and said he was happy the dog survived. "Those who abuse animals should sit in jail," he said.
