Habima, Israel’s national theater, premiered its production of "The Miser" by Moliere at the opening of the International Theatre Festival in China, at the prestigious Beijing Capital Theater on March 8, 2016.
This first appearance by Habima in China was well received by the audience and received warm reviews in the Chinese media. Listening to the response of the audience, in what was for many their first encounter with Israelis, laughing during the play and applauding loudly at the end, it was easy to forget that they did not understand the Hebrew spoken by the actors.
Israel’s ambassador to China, Matan Vilnai, who spoke at the reception after the premiere, noted the importance of cultural ties between Israel and China in strengthening bilateral relations. Culture, music, art and theater are the best ambassadors of Israel in the world. The Israeli Embassy in Beijing has been working in cooperation with the Beijing Capital Theater for a number of years, bringing Israeli theater productions to Chinese audiences with great success – among them performances by the Gesher and Cameri theaters.
